In this conversation, Giorgia will share why she deeply aligns with maternal and child osteopathy and she will provide a fascinating insight into child development issues in the early stages of an infant and what is the role of an osteopath and the areas of benefits that will intrinsically touch also the well-being of a new mama.
1- Why is it important to take the child to the osteopath?
Answer:
The baby spends about 9 months inside the mother’s uterus and the first trauma is certainly the birth. The more physiological and eutectic the birth is, the less traumatic the impact of the extrauterine life will be for the baby. If, on the other hand, childbirth becomes difficult, very long, and requires the use of kiwis for example, the baby could report muscle tension or incorrect postures which, if not treated immediately, can lead to more serious problems in the future.
2- When does it make sense to take the child to osteopathy?
Answer:
As soon as possible, i.e. within 15 days of the newborn, it would be ideal, if this is not possible, at least within the first month; in some parts of the world the osteopath works in hospitals and therefore the child is visited immediately.
3- But hasn’t the child already been visited by the pediatrician? Why bring the baby to an osteopath too?
Answer:
Certainly, the pediatrician MUST visit the newborn; we are figures who can collaborate with the medical world because we also go to analyze the posture, any preferential positions maintained by the child, contractures such as for example a myogenic torticollis, and help him restore correct functionality
childbirth. They have endless ideas about body position, movements and techniques to make the process smooth and healthy.
4-How can the treatment help?
Answer:
– Suction problems, for example by evaluating well how the baby feeds; inspecting the oral cavity by carefully checking the movement of the tongue and frenula.
-Problems related to freedom of rotation of the head both from the right side and from the left side; this is important because in the first few months, the baby’s neurological system develops at an incredible speed, consequently, the stimuli should always be symmetrical.
If the child finds it difficult to deliver and had a long birth, we can help the baby to release the newborn’s visceral tensions and help him understand the mechanism of defecation: we must consider that the newborn has to perform a very difficult action, i.e. push to unload but release the anal sphincter and this can create difficulties initially
An osteopath can also check the motor development of the child well, that is how all the motor stages are reached, i.e. the quality of the movement
5- Can osteopathy help with breastfeed too?
Answer:
Yes, of course, it helps a lot in cases where there is an incorrect attachment to the breast; we will evaluate the muscular tensions at the facial level, at the intrabuccal level, specifically observing how the baby feeds; There are children, for example, who feed more from one breast than another so we will try to analyze the reason together and help and support the mother
Question:
Does osteopathy help in the case of reflux?
Answer:
It can certainly be of help if this reflux depends on the posture of the baby and the type of birth she has had. In reflux it is necessary to understand whether it is physiological reflux or reflux disease; in general, we can say that we support the pediatrics to help improve the child’s posture and consequently help him with the symptoms

About Giorgia
Before dedicating body and soul to the osteopathy world, Giorgia’s background studies are in radiology. She then recognised the necessity to go over the physicality and the need to get in direct contact with the person behind the patient. She has a spectacular ability to connect and FEEL the human body on a soulful level, and in each treatment, she puts together her knowledge of the physicality and the intricate relationship with the mental aspect as well as the spiritual.Giorgia is open fo your Q’s in direct on her Instagram page @dr.giorgia_osteopata
